The Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) in the United States has approved adding MPS II as a condition to the recommended uniform screening panel (RUSP) for newborns. This enables several states to begin testing newborns immediately. Early diagnosis will allow early treatment erasing many of the debilitating manifestations of this disease.
MPS II is the second MPS disorder to be included in newborn screening in the US. MPS I was added by DHHS in 2016.
We congratulate the National MPS Society who have worked tirelessly with their partners and the MPS community to get this passed. Their efforts have paid off!
The Canadian MPS Society has been advocating to add MPS to the Newborn Screening Panels across Canada. Ontario is currently the only Province screening for MPS I-H.
